This photo collection about public transport in Vienna has been created in May 1996 during a one-week visit in the Austrian capital. The comments are written in 1996 with some small additions and changes from the 2009 perspective. Note that the English comments are also from a time when my English was much less fluent as it is today.
The public transportation system of Vienna is quite interesting for people who are interested in subways, tramways, sections of different age (from 100 years old up to brand new):
- 4 different transport systems: Classical tram, heavy subway, more light-railish subway and commuter trains.
- Different layouts of the lines: From 100 year old tracks next to the rivers through the city to brand new, just opened tunnels.
- More than half a dozen connecting stations between different subway lines, partly shield built and deep below the floor
- Sophisticated buildings for traffic problems like tram tunnels or double-layered terminus stations.
